Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
